This is a Western Boxing beginner course in Mandarin Chinese and the beginning of a unique content marketing campaign to attract Chinese guests to Kombat Group Thailand.

This will focus primarily on Thailand although much can apply elsewhere. First it should be noted that they won't make it easy for you to earn for yourself here, but don't think you don't bring anything to the table.

Thailand has this sort of unbridled, entrepreneurial energy to it. Everyone is on the hustle and eager to earn. Fruit, clothes, a ride, a good time... whatever you want.

Everything is negotiable. Everything is possible.

Thailand has so much to offer too. Services are cheap and goods are abundant. Obviously these commodities are common here and thus hold the most value to foreigners.

Here's where you fit in.

Thailand is lacking in communication skills, Western expectations of conduct and cross-cultural acumen. This is good and bad.

While the communication barriers and cultural divides can make your local dealings quite frustrating, these basic skills (or traits) alone hold significant value and can be capitalized on.

1)Communication. The low level of English here doesn't matter for basic transactions, but for selling higher-ticket products/ services (especially online)...good English is necessary.

2)Expectations of conduct. Organization, tone of voice, responsiveness and punctuality. Think emails, calendar invites, proper invoices, itineraries.

3)Cross-cultural acumen. What do foreigners actually want? You know best. Tailor a product/ service to current market demands or accommodate a specific group.

All commerce starts with desire and depends on trust. As a foreigner, you are in the unique position to better understand how to serve others AND better connect with them.

For reference, I started learning Mandarin at age 23. Thai came later at 25.
I learned both in their respective countries and speak both fairly fluently.

This does not mean I can converse on every topic nor does it imply 100% accuracy.

flu·en·cy | /ˈflo͞oənsē/ | the ability to express oneself easily and articulately.

Both are tonal, share a comparable grammar structure, very economical (unlike English) and share a similar paradigm of thought.

For example:

"Have you eaten rice yet?" has a comparable construction (Eat Rice already Not/ or Yet), consists of 4 syllables, and is the common greeting in both languages.

Both share a similar literalness to language formation.

ฟ้าร้อง - thunder - sky cry (TH)
电话 - phone - electric talk (CH)

Despite their similarities, I've personally found Chinese far easier to grasp.

Thai has always felt elusive, slippery and just out of reach -- as if attempting to wield a flimsy reed as opposed to a heavier, sturdier sword that is Mandarin. I credit this to the melodic, sing-song element of Thai whereas Mandarin is sharper and more terse.

I can firmly grip Mandarin but only cradle Thai.
Thai is gentle, Mandarin is harsh. I sing Thai and bark Mandarin.

Another factor is the seemingly looser structure of spoken Thai. Its language at times appears to merely compliment feelings/ vibes - almost secondary in nature to the feeling imparted on the listener. Words are jumbled together - lacking any coherent structure - and thrown at the recipient to "get" the message.

Mandarin and more so English has a certain rigidity that is in many ways comforting. The parameters provide a sense of order that may be relied upon. A clear right and a clear wrong. This matters in the beginning of learning any new system.

So often I hear ก็ได้ in response to questions of Thai syntax and word choice.

Literally translated to: also can.

If seemingly any structure is valid, then what am I to hold on to?

I want to elaborate on my last essay focused on the premise that by dropping ego, anxiety melts and progression accelerates. I’m afraid the advice to simply be less concerned with the perception of others is lacking.

Lacking in the sense that it’s just not very telling nor actionable.

It’s like when someone tells you to “just be yourself.”

Like what are you to do with that information?

Oh right,  I see now that my fear stems from the inherently false idea that “I” is real and exists in a world of fragmented objects. That by saying to 'just be myself,’ you’re actually advising that I be free of self - the elaborate, mental construct of ideas, memories and labels that ‘I’ identifies as ‘me’ but  only exists in relation to my identification with ‘it’ and therefore unreal.  Anything following I am _____ is a construct; I am is all that which is real, and nothing real can be threatened, nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of god.

Unlikely.

So anyways, back to language learning. I think it’ll just be easiest to offer a hypothetical example to explain just what I mean by dropping ego:

I am trying to learn a language.
I go to the market to buy bananas.
I don’t even know how to say bananas.

I have two basic approaches here:

1. Point at bananas, pretend I know what’s going on, slide through and preserve preferred image of self (ego) as someone that knows the language.
2. Point at bananas and ask how to say this. I then plug this new vocabulary word into the basic algorithm that I’ve learned: "How much are ______?"  I likely mispronounce the new vocabulary (bananas) and take a full minute to stumble through this phase.

In the second approach, I own the fact that I'm learning. There is no preferred image of self to uphold and therefore no fear of it's exposure. I am at the market to get some bananas and practice my language of study. I can do both free of embarrassment with the right attitude.

Abandon ego.

So simple. So effective.
Seriously, this alone will alleviate your anxiety and accelerate your progress.

Language is a skill that must be developed in public.

1-1 instruction does offer a way to circumvent this a bit (and is highly recommended), but it can’t quite replicate the experience (and benefits) of real-life interaction.

Fluency comes through repeated interaction with real-life people.

This can be a bit scary, so here’s what people do instead:

1. Don’t speak.
2. Rely on a couple phrases.
3. Sneak through interaction; nod their head and say okay without a clue what’s being said.

Now if you’re not trying to learn the language, this is fine, but I’m talking about people that actually spend time and money studying the language that do this. They study the language but are too afraid to appear to not know it so they don’t speak outside of class and never gain fluency.

Doesn't make much sense does it?

The goal - the only goal - is fluency.  So to better achieve this, I want to first acknowledge the core issue here (fear of exposing ignorance/ incompetence) and offer an obvious solution – abandoning ego ie preferred idea of self existing entirely in relation to others (constructed purely of the mind).

You simply can’t progress if simultaneously striving to maintain this outward appearance.

Fortunately, ignorance is a very forgivable sin -- especially in the context of not knowing a foreign language. Have you ever looked at Westerner abroad and said can you believe this idiot doesn’t even know Thai / Chinese/ Hindu/ Indonesian/ etc? Let’s make him feel shitty. No. No one else has either.

There is no real threat to any real object thus nothing real to fear.  With ego in play, however there is a threat. A false threat to an imagined idea –  your preferred, constructed identity of self which is ego.

Abandon it.

From there, every interaction becomes a learning opportunity, every person becomes a teacher.
