Asian commerce and where you can fit in

This will focus primarily on Thailand although much can apply elsewhere. First it should be noted that they won't make it easy for you to earn for yourself here, but don't think you don't bring anything to the table.

Thailand has this sort of unbridled, entrepreneurial energy to it. Everyone is on the hustle and eager to earn. Fruit, clothes, a ride, a good time... whatever you want.

Everything is negotiable. Everything is possible.

Thailand has so much to offer too. Services are cheap and goods are abundant. Obviously these commodities are common here and thus hold the most value to foreigners.

Here's where you fit in.

Thailand is lacking in communication skills, Western expectations of conduct and cross-cultural acumen. This is good and bad news.

Bad for obvious reasons: the communication barriers and cultural divides can make your local dealings quite frustrating.

The good news is these basic skills (or traits) alone hold significant value and can be capitalized on.

1)Communication. The low level of English here doesn't matter for basic transactions, but for selling higher-ticket products/ services (especially online)...good English is necessary.

2)Expectations of conduct. Organization, tone of voice, responsiveness and punctuality. Think emails, calendar invites, proper invoices, itineraries.

3)Cross-cultural acumen. What do foreigners actually want? You know best. Tailor a product/ service to current market demands or accommodate a specific group.

All commerce starts with desire and depends on trust. As a foreigner, you are in the unique position to better understand how to serve others AND better connect with them.
